I have been on a minimalist kick lately. I have recently written an article about bike travel bags while researching how to store your bike in a tiny home. Then I asked myself, ‘if you don’t have a lot of space, or a garage to store your bike, or you live in a small apartment, and don’t want to buy a travel bag, how do you store your bike?” That’s when I remembered THE tiny bike rack.
Funny thing is, I already sort of have a blog about this but, I just wanted to concentrate on the smallest one with the smallest footprint. Not to mention a very cool simple design.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, I give you THE CLUG.
CLUG is the “world’s smallest bike rack”, according to the company that sells it. I have NOT seen all the bike racks in the world so I am going to take their word for it, but you can make the case that it is a pretty valid argument.
The company, “Hornit” was founded by a former lawyer and an Ironman triathlete Tom de Pelet. In 2014, they had a very successful Kickstarter campaign, raising over $100,000 (Canadian), well over their project goal. And they have been featured in numerous magazines since then.

What is the CLUG?
It is made of two parts, the clipper, and the gripper. You screw the clipper in place wherever you want to mount your bike. Then you snap the gripper in place and, tadaaa, you have yourself a sleek looking, cool bike rack in minutes.
Where can I use it?
You can mount it anywhere, as long as you use a surface that you can drill a whole to screw the clipper in. You don’t believe me, look at the photos below.
What if you don’t have a drill or it is not your house or you don’t want to drill a hole into the wall?
No worries, you can use picture hanging strips to attach the CLUG to the wall. “Wait a minute”, you say, “How does that work?” I am going to copy paste the description of the guys who invented this mini bike rack, instead of trying to explain it myself here because I think they explain it better.
“Since the force is transmitted through the wheels to the floor, something like a 3M command strip is all that’s needed to hold your CLUG in place.”
Will it fit my bike?
It comes in three different sizes. Roadie, Hybrid, and MTB.
Roadie is for skinny tires, guessed it right, for road bikes mostly. The tires size is 1 – 1.25″ or 23-32 mm.
The tires size for Hybrid is 1.3 – 1.75″ or 32 – 42 mm and last but not least, 1.8 – 2.5″ or 43 – 62 mm for MTB.
These tiny bike racks are from 1.5 inches to 3.5 inches wide depending on the model, it is insane how small but efficient these things are. Needless to say, everything you need to install comes included when you buy one.
- One Clug Bike Clip
- Two Screws
- Two Drywall Anchors
- Installation Guide
- Mounting Template
are included in the box.
Can I mount it vertically?
Yes, you can. You can mount it vertically or horizontally, but if you mount it vertically, make sure you rest the rear tire on the ground.
What is the biggest issue that I need to pay attention to?
You need to pay attention to the tire pressure. If the tire pressure decreases, the bike can come off and fall. The tire has to fit tightly to the rack in order for this design to work. Also, don’t bump into your bike while mounted, the bike may come off the rack.
Studs or not?
If you screw it into a wall stud it will be more stable obviously, but you don’t need too much support for it. The CLUG is basically holding the bike in a stationary position.
How about fat bikes or heavy hybrid, electric bikes?
It probably would not work for those, because of the tire size and how heavy they can be.
Can I use it for a kid’s bike?
If the tire fits you can use it. It is mostly about the tire size.
I think these things are a brilliant idea for what they are trying to accomplish. It gives you a very viable bike storage solution if you don’t have a lot of space, a garage, or if you live in a small apartment or a tiny home. I have even read that some people use multiple CLUGS to store their extra tires. As long as the tires fit, you can have a bunch of these mounted and use them for your tires only as well.
They look cool, have three different colors to choose from. Yes, there are a couple of minor things to pay attention and they only hold one bike, but if you live in a small space, my guess is you are not going to have multiple bikes anyway.
Overall, I really like the CLUG. Happy biking.
